Editorial Policy & Data Sources

This page explains where the information on Chinese Daily Life comes from, how the price data is produced, and what its limits are.

What this site is

Chinese Daily Life indexes videos that document everyday life in China: street food, city routines, rural life, transport, housing and work. Videos are embedded from YouTube and remain the property of their creators, who are credited and linked on every page.

Where the price data comes from

Our data pages (cost of living, food prices, rents, fares, salaries) are compiled from the spoken content of the videos indexed here. When a person in a video says what something cost, that figure is recorded, together with the sentence it came from and a link to the video.

This means:

  • Every figure can be traced back to a specific video through the link on the same row.
  • Figures are what people said on camera, not survey data or official statistics.
  • Prices in China vary widely by city, season and neighbourhood, and change over time.

What we do not do

  • We do not estimate, infer or model prices that were not stated.
  • When a transcript does not give a figure, the page says so rather than filling the gap.
  • We do not present a single video as representative of a whole city.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong or a source is misattributed, email second250@gmail.com and we will correct the page.
