hey i'm Joe and this is my girlfriend Mei we live in Guangzhou China in a place called an urban village this is the alley we walk through every day the sun never really reaches down here living here is like living in a maze when we first moved here we almost couldn't find our way home the gaps between buildings are really narrow just one or two meters wide they call them handshake buildings because neighbors in opposite buildings can actually reach out and shake hands but rent is cheap living here helps us get by for now because we both lost our jobs
we've tried different jobs over the past few months but nothing really worked out right now we only have a few thousand RMB left our room is on the second floor alright let's go inside it's about 20 square meters there's a small living room it’s okay, a little bright but the bedroom is darker we need to turn on the light even during the day but we organize things and we try to make it feel like home our rent is only 700 RMB a month that's about one 100 US dollars let me show you some of our treasures this is our fridge we bought it secondhand online
for only 120 RMB that's about 17 dollars the guy who sold it to me he lives nearby he helped me carry it down from the fourth floor of his building drag it to mine and carry it up there's not much in the fridge right now but we'll go shopping soon and this this is our washing machine 68RMB about 10 dollars it's tiny but there's only two of us it works we don't need expensive things we just need things that work this is our bathroom it's very basic nothing really to see here and we hang our clean clothes on the chain by the window to dry every inch of
space here has its use and then this my fish tank one meter long the living room is already small and i wanted to put this big fish tank here Mei said at first are you crazy but later she fell in love with it too sometimes she just sits there quietly staring at the fish swimming no phone no talking just watching it made me realize something the things we love the peace we look for they're not that different between two people oh and this little guy this is our cat he's very naughty when i'm editing videos he runs over and steps on my keyboard but i can't
get mad at him he's too cute maybe he just wants to be with me while i work we put a net on the window because the cat often jumps up there to play and we're worried it might fall down our cat is very curious about what's happening downstairs every time he hears a sound he jumps up to the window and watches for a long time he's not just a cat he's family within a few hundred meters from our door there's a food street if we don't feel like cooking we can get a proper meal for less than two dollars there's also a wet market vegetables are incredibly cheap
tomatoes are 2.5RMB for 500 grams that's about 35 cents in China prices are usually listed per 500 grams so one kilogram of tomatoes costs 5 RMB which is about 70 cents Like a bouquet a lot of vegetables. Bigger than yours Each one is very big Still green we spent a total of 8.2 rmb on vegetables that's about 1.2 dollars this is a package pickup station you find your package by the number code then scan it yourself to take it this is important a package pickup station why does that matter because online shopping is a huge part of daily life here we buy
almost everything cheap clothes household stuff sometimes just little things that cost one or two dollars Outbound successfully, all items retrieved. What is this blush The small towel, right? It was for me. face towel Mei is what i call a mix and match master she takes whatever we have left at home eggs eggs cucumber woodier mushrooms dried tofu sticks and stir-fries them all together Plus a bowl of hot rice that's it, such a simple meal but you know what it's really delicious neither of us is very good at cooking but we still prefer to cook at home
because it's healthier and saves money Is it flavorful enough? Try it Time to eat Is it tasty Delicious, so delicious! Fortunately, the cucumber wasn't salty. we filmed the first clips for this video almost a month ago but we were too scared to edit them we don't know how to film well we feel awkward in front of the camera our voices sound strange we kept deleting and reshooting we also worried what if no one watches what if people leave mean comments what if we try so hard and still fail but then we realized something we've already failed by not trying
so we did a lot of research and learned how to make a good video we wrote down ideas in a notebook we asked ourselves what can we offer that no one else can and the answer was simple our real life not a perfect life not a rich life just a real one so here we are two people with no jobs almost no money one naughty cat and a drem to survive through honest videos we don't know if this will work but we know one thing a small room can still be clean a poor life can still be beautiful and if you don't try you'll never know if you've made it this far thank you
really this is our real life dark sometimes but warm poor but honest if you enjoyed this video please give us a like and subscribe thank you for listening to our story we'll see you in the next one
